Bass Guitar Lessons in Sheffield
Sheffield's bass specialist — beginners to advanced, in-person or online
I’ve been playing bass for over 20 years — recording at Abbey Road, working with Mike Stock and Shayne Ward — and teaching it almost as long. Whether you’re picking up a bass for the first time or sharpening your technique, lessons are built around what you actually want to learn.

20+ years playing
Bass since I was a teenager. I’ve worked with Mike Stock, Shayne Ward, the Inklings, Sarah Darling — and recorded at Abbey Road and the O2.
Built around you

What you'll learn
Lessons cover everything from first notes to advanced techniques. Here’s what we’ll work on.
Technique
Fingerstyle, picking, slap & pop, tapping, three-finger plucking, harmonics — built up gradually so it actually sticks.
Theory & reading
Chord charts, key signatures, reading music, understanding the fretboard. As deep as you want to go.
Songs you love
Rock, pop, soul, funk, jazz, blues, metal, reggae — you bring the songs you want to play and we’ll work them out together.
Playing with others
Locking in with a drummer, ear training, improvising, walking basslines — the bits that turn practice into actual music.
Who I teach
Total beginners through to working musicians. Whatever stage you’re at, lessons start where you are.
Complete beginners
Never picked up a bass before? Perfect. We’ll start with how to hold it, how to make a clean note, and have you playing along to a song by the end of the first lesson.
Improvers
You can play a bit but you’ve hit a wall. We’ll fix the gaps — timing, technique, theory — and get you moving forward again.
Advanced players
Working musicians, gigging bassists, players prepping for sessions or auditions. Lessons sharpen specific skills and tackle whatever you’re stuck on.
Exam prep
Rockschool, Trinity, ABRSM grades for bass. Also GCSE / A-Level / BTEC support — performance pieces, ear training, sight-reading, theory.
Piano
Classical, pop, jazz. Reading, technique, improvisation, and composition — at the studio or online.
Ukulele
Quick to start, easy on the fingers, lots of fun. Brilliant for kids and adults.
Music Theory
Grade 1 basics through to harmony, jazz analysis, and exam prep (ABRSM, GCSE, A-Level).
How lessons work
Most lessons happen at my home studio in Sheffield — a fully kitted-out space with basses, amps, and recording gear so you can hear yourself back. If you can’t get to Sheffield, I also teach online over Zoom — same lesson, same prep, same follow-up notes after.
Each lesson is one-to-one. We start with where you are, what you want to play, and what’s getting in the way. Then we work on it. No fixed syllabus, no padding, no homework you’ll never do — just the bits that actually move you forward.
Your first lesson is a one-off — pay for that single session and see if we’re a good fit. After that, I charge in monthly blocks up front, and lessons run weekly at the same time each week. Consistency is what makes progress stick.
Pricing & availability
Same rates whether you come to the studio or have lessons online over Zoom. Pay as a single lesson for your first session, then in monthly blocks once we’ve found a slot that suits.

He explains things clearly, keeps lessons relaxed, and tailors everything to your level and the music you enjoy. He also covers music theory in a really easy-to-understand way, so you actually know what you’re playing and why. I’ve made great progress in a short time, and it’s always a good laugh as well. Top teacher 👍Posted on Google NellyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Adam is a very friendly and competent bass teacher. He is teaching my 9 year old son who has ADHD how to play the bass guitar and he has so much patience with him which is wonderful. He is coming on in leaps and bounds because of this, I am so grateful to him for his input and hard work. I had been trying to learn guitar by myself for about a year & found I had plateaued, I have now had six lessons with Adam & have learned so much already,a good balance of theory and playing.he explains everything so well and I look forward to my lesson every week.i would recommend him very highly to anyone!Posted on Google creaseda teatowellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Adam is a brilliant teacher. I’m quite nervous in learning environments and take a lot of time to understand things. I’ve only been with him a month and I’ve already learned so much. He has explained everything step by step to make sure I understand, and now I’m flying through guitar and music theory. Lessons are well planned and I have a really good time. He’s also very easy to talk to. I’m really excited to keep learning with him :)Posted on Google Kevin CowlingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been tutored by Adam for a few weeks now and really enjoy our sessions,Adam is thorough and clear with is explanation of music and patient if we need to go over things again,is program is great for a beginner like myself and he’s always contactable in between sessions.Posted on Google Lynne AustinTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Adam was recommended to me, and I can see why. As a retired female deciding to learn to play guitar was exciting but quite daunting. Adam was welcoming and reassuring, his mix of therory and practise helps you progress practically but also gives you the skills to progress in lots of other ways. Sending me away with little practice pieces means I feel like I am making progress even after the first lesson, it also motivates me to practise every day even if I only have 10 minutes to spare. Highly recommended, if you need a guitar teacherm no matter your age or skill check him out.Posted on Google Melissa GraysonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. So as a late 40 something I was a little hesitant and nervous in starting to learn the guitar but as soon as I contacted Adam he immediately put my mind at rest. He is a lovely guy with a great way of teaching and makes it fun. He also has lots of patience which is good when dealing with me! 😂Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 75 reviews
Do I need my own bass to start?
Yes for online lessons — you'll need a bass and a way to get audio across (a laptop with built-in mic is fine to start). For in-person lessons, I have basses at the studio you can use during the lesson, but you'll want your own to practise between sessions. Get in touch if you want a quick recommendation on what to buy.
How long does it take to get good?
Honest answer: it depends entirely on how much you practise between lessons. Most students can play along to a song they like within a few weeks. For exam grades or proper technique mastery, think months not weeks — but you'll feel real progress every single lesson.
Can I learn slap bass or a specific technique?
Yes. Slap, fingerstyle, picking, three-finger plucking, tapping, harmonics — name the technique and we'll work on it. I'll break it down step by step and adjust the pace based on what's clicking and what isn't. There are also free technique videos on my How To Play Bass page if you want to get a head start.
Do you teach kids?
Yes, I teach all ages. For younger students, lessons are paced and structured to keep them engaged — usually 30-minute sessions work best to start. Parents are welcome to sit in for the first few lessons.
What if I want to focus on a specific song or band?
Bring it. We can work directly on tracks you love — I'll transcribe the bassline if needed, break down the technique, and have you playing it properly. It's the fastest way to make practice feel like fun rather than homework. If you want a written transcription to take away, I also offer bass transcriptions as a separate service.
