I’ve been teaching ukulele alongside guitar and bass for years — to kids picking up their first instrument, adults rediscovering music, and guitarists looking for something quick to take on holiday. Complete beginners
Never picked up a ukulele before? Perfect — it’s one of the easiest instruments to start on. We’ll have you playing a recognisable song by the end of the first lesson.
Kids & families
Ukulele is brilliant for younger students — it’s small, light, and the chord shapes are simple. I teach kids from primary age upwards, and parents are welcome to learn alongside.
Improvers
You can play a few chords but you’ve hit a wall. We’ll work on smoother changes, fingerpicking, harder strumming patterns, and the songs you actually want to play.
Guitarists branching out
If you already play guitar, ukulele is a quick win — most chord shapes transfer with a re-tune. Lessons fast-track you past the basics so you can focus on what’s different.
How lessons work
Lessons happen at my home studio in Sheffield — relaxed setting, all the gear you need (including a couple of ukuleles you can use during the lesson if yours hasn’t arrived yet). I record what you’re playing so we can listen back and spot what to work on. If you can’t get to Sheffield, online lessons over Zoom work brilliantly for ukulele — it’s one of the best instruments to learn remotely because the camera angle’s easy.
Every lesson is one-to-one. We’ll start with what you want to play, what’s tripping you up, and where you’d like to be in a few months. From there I build a plan around what you’ve actually told me — not a generic syllabus, just the songs and skills that move you forward.
The first lesson is a one-off — book in, come down, see if you like the way I teach. From there, students typically book a regular weekly or fortnightly slot and I charge in monthly blocks paid up front.

What size ukulele should I buy?
For adult beginners, a concert or tenor ukulele is the sweet spot — soprano (the smallest) is fine but a bit cramped if you've got bigger hands. For kids, soprano is usually right. Avoid the cheapest end of the market — under £30 and they're often hard to keep in tune, which is frustrating when you're just starting out. Message me before you buy and I'll point you towards what's worth it.
Is the ukulele really easy to learn?
Easier than guitar, yes — only four strings, simple chord shapes, easy on the fingers. You can be playing recognisable songs within the first lesson. But "easy to start" doesn't mean "no depth" — there's plenty to learn beyond the basics if you want to take it further (fingerpicking, jazz chords, improvisation, soloing).
Can you teach my child?
Yes, ukulele is one of the best instruments for younger students — small, light, and quick to make music on. I teach from primary age upwards. Parents are welcome to sit in for the first few lessons, or learn alongside their child if they fancy it.
I already play guitar — is it worth taking lessons or can I just figure it out?
You'll figure out the chords on your own pretty quickly, but lessons fast-track you past the bits that feel "weird" coming from guitar (different tuning, different chord shapes for the same names, smaller fretboard). A few sessions can save weeks of frustration and get you playing properly rather than getting by.
Can I learn fingerpicking and more advanced stuff?
Absolutely. Once the basics are solid we can dig into fingerpicking patterns, chord melody arrangements, jazz chords, soloing, and improvisation. The ukulele has more depth than its reputation suggests — there's no ceiling on how far you can take it.
